David Linley, now known as David Snowdon, started LINLEY in 1985 as a bespoke furniture company working on private commissions. From a small shop on the Kings Road, David and his team would take design briefs and create pieces directly in the workshop. “We were one of the first to bespoke’, explains David, ‘We would help clients create their ideal piece from a blank piece of paper. They would get involved, their ideas and our design. It was a personal experience from start to finish, genuinely unique’. It wasn’t long before the business grew and moved to a larger space on Pimlico Road close to where David’s father, Lord Snowdon, had his photographic studio.
Now, as LINLEY has just celebrated its 30th anniversary year, the business has grown to include interior and yacht design, fitted cabinetry and kitchens, furniture and gifts and accessories. Almost everything continues to be designed and made in the UK relying on a network of 260 master craftsmen who all share David’s love of handcrafted design and attention to detail.
Last autumn marked the opening of the extensively refurbished flagship Belgravia showroom, still on Pimlico Road. The new design was inspired by David’s childhood experience of spending time in his father’s studio and features white walls, concrete floors and spot lighting. An impressive double height atrium space has been created for a programme of art exhibitions. Customers can also come and browse books in the Inspiration Library covering art, photography, architecture, food and fashion, or explore the fitted kitchen and wood panelled Club Room.
