Elizabeth Smith was created a life peer in 1995, as Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill and has a special interest in Russia and the CIS countries.

She started her career with the Great-Britain USSR Association, later the British East -West Centre, , an organisation dedicated to sustaining dialogue and contact with the countries of the then Soviet Union and core-funded by the UK FCO. Working closely with Sir Fitzroy Maclean, Chairman of the organisation, she developed a commitment to the importance of breaking down stereotypes by bringing people together in shared experience.

Baroness Smith is Chair of the John Smith Trust, which runs a Fellowship programme for the next generation of leaders from the CIS countries thereby creating a network of emerging leaders across the region. The programme is supported by the UK FCO.

Baroness Smith has three daughters and three grandchildren and lives in Edinburgh.
